City Council Accepts Ownership of Southward and Northward Parks
The City Council approved motions to accept ownership of two parcels of property, Southward Park and Northward Park, from North Adams Community Schools. These parks were previously operated and maintained by the city for decades but were found to be technically still under the ownership of Decatur City Schools, with North Adams as the successor in interest. This transfer of ownership is a necessary step for the city to proceed with redevelopment plans and apply for grant opportunities for these park areas.
City Council Tables Decision on Club 720 Housing Project on First Street
The City Council discussed a proposal from Club 720 (formerly Resource Hub) to develop small-scale housing on city-owned vacant lots located south of the Macklin building on First Street. The initial larger-scale rental apartment complex project with commercial development on First Street had evolved and was not moving forward. Club 720 proposed taking ownership of the vacant lots (125, 135, and 207 South First Street) and working with a developer to build homes, potentially townhomes, after securing grant funding. The council expressed interest but requested more information and a chance to consult with the Redevelopment Commission before proceeding, ultimately tabling the decision.
Decatur Main Street Seeks Continued City Funding for 2027 Budget
Decatur Main Street representatives Max Miller and Taylor Brown presented a request to the City Council for continued financial support in the 2027 budget. They highlighted how city funding strengthens downtown businesses, improves community appearance, attracts visitors and investment, builds partnerships, and maintains their Indiana Main Street accreditation, which provides access to training and grants. The current funding structure allocates $25,000 towards Main Street operations and $25,000 towards a citywide facade program. The council motioned to maintain the same funding levels for 2027.
